Oral Medications: A Useful Clinical Guide, Presented by Dr. James Fanelli

This course is a clinically relevant explanation of the indications and considerations for utilizing oral medications in primary eye care. Sometimes, oral medications are the preferred route of medication administration whereas other times, oral medications are used as adjunctive therapies. This is a nuts-and-bolts course on utilizing oral medications in clinical care which discussed antibiotics, pain therapy, viral infections and trauma.

Simplifying Systemic Antibiotics, Presented by Dr. Blair Lonsberry

Optometrists are familiar with the use of topical antibiotics in the treatment of ocular conditions, but often hesitate in the use of systemic antibiotics in treatment protocols. Utilizing the latest in interactive technology, this course will review the major groups of antibiotics, their modes of action and their systemic indications in infection management. Special emphasis will be placed on the current use of systemic antibiotics in the treatment of ocular disease conditions.

Oral Pharmaceuticals for Anterior Segment Disease, Presented by Dr. Nathan Lighthizer

This interactive course examines the use of oral pharmaceuticals in the treatment/management of a variety of anterior segment diseases. Topical areas include HSV keratitis, herpes zoster ophthalmicus, bacterial/allergic conjunctivitis, lid/periocular tissues, uveitis and dry eye disease/Sjogren’s.

Meet the Moderator

Dr. Jennifer Stewart is an optometrist, internationally recognized speaker, writer, consultant, and entrepreneur. She has a passion for helping optometrists and organizations with operations, sales success, practice management and sales team training through her advisory and consulting firm, OD Perspectives. She is the Professional Editor of Independent Strong, is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the New England College of Optometry and a consultant for CooperVision, MacuHealth, GPN and Zyloware. She is also the recipient of the 2022 Emerging Leader Award from the Optical Women's Association. With a deep interest in sports vision, Dr. Stewart is the Co-Founder and Chief Vision Officer for Performance 20/20, which provides services for sports and performance vision training. She is a recipient of the Theia Award for Innovation by Women in Optometry and serves on the Executive Board for the International Sports Vision Association.

Meet the Speakers

Dr. James Fanelli

Dr. Fanelli is originally from suburban Philadelphia, and attended the Pennsylvania College of Optometry.  He has been in private practice since that time in coastal North Carolina, specializing in ocular disease management.   He is the founder and clinical and medical director of the Cape Fear Eye Institute in Wilmington NC.

He has lectured extensively around the globe on a wide variety of topics dealing primarily with advanced diagnostic and therapeutic modalities.  He has developed a course for certifying OD’s in the use of injections in primary eye care that has been used by several states and was the first optometrist to teach injections procedures at national meetings in the USA.  

Dr. Fanelli is a Contributing Editor for Review of Optometry and is the author of the bi-monthly Glaucoma Grand Rounds column.

He is a past President of the North Carolina State Board of Examiners in Optometry.  He is also a past Trustee of  the North Carolina State Optometric Society, where he served as Continuing Education Chairman.  He serves as chariman of the EyeSki Optometric Conference and the CE in Italy/Europe Conference.  He is an adjunct faculty member of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry,  Western University of Health Sciences and UAB School of Optometry.

Dr. Jim Thimons

Dr. Thimons is a 1978 graduate of Ohio State University College of Optometry. He completed his hospital residency at the Chillicothe, VA Medical Center in 1979 and then served as Chief, Optometry Service until 1985. He then accepted the position of Center Director at Omni Eye Services, Fairfax, Virginia and served in that role until 1989 when he became Chairman, Department of Clinical Sciences at the State University of New York. While at SUNY he developed The Glaucoma Institute, a clinical research center, and served as its first Director. In 1998, he accepted the position of Executive Director of TLC and served in that role until 2002 when he co- founded Ophthalmic Consultants of Connecticut.

Dr. Thimons has received numerous awards for his service to the profession and has over 200 hundred publications in Glaucoma, Dry Eye, Cornea and External Disease, as well as Refractive Surgery and New Technologies. He is a nationally and internationally acclaimed Speaker and Educator and an acknowledged leader in ophthalmic clinical education. He serves in professorial appointments at several universities in the US and has been a clinical investigator in over 20 NIH, NEI and Post Release Clinical Trials. In 1999 he was awarded Optometry’s Top Educator and was selected as one of the Top Ten Clinicians of the decade. In 2002 he founded the National Glaucoma Society. In 2005 he was inducted into the Optometry Hall of Fame and has recently served as President, Connecticut Association of Optometrists. Dr. Thimons was selected as the Top Eye Doctor in Fairfield County in 2013. In 2020 he was selected as the Bailey Medal Award winner by The Ohio State University in acknowledgement of his contributions to the profession. In 2022 he was selected by Newsweek magazine as one of the Top Eye Doctors in America.

Dr. Blair Lonsberry

Dr. Lonsberry grew up in Rossburn, Manitoba (Canada).  He obtained his Optometry degree from the University of Waterloo in 1996 after completing a Master of Science in Physiology from the University of Manitoba. He completed his residency in Primary Care Optometry from the Illinois College of Optometry in 1997, then joined the faculty at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN. During his time at SCO, he completed a Masters in Education degree with an emphasis in adult learning. 

Currently, Dr. Lonsberry is a Full Professor with Pacific University College of Optometry in Oregon where his primary teaching responsibilities are supervising interns and overseeing a specialty "lumps and bumps" clinic. In his spare time, he goes to Anchorage, Alaska where he sees patients in a private practice, and he has two White German Shepherd dogs named Beau and Bennett who keep him sane(ish).

Dr. Lonsberry is a Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry, a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, the Optometric Retinal Society, and the Optometric Glaucoma Society.

Dr. Nathan Lighthizer

Born and raised in Bismarck, North Dakota, Dr. Nate Lighthizer, O.D., F.A.A.O., is a graduate of Pacific University College of Optometry. Upon graduation, he completed a residency in Family Practice Optometry with an emphasis in Ocular Disease through Northeastern State University Oklahoma College of Optometry (NSUOCO). Dr. Lighthizer has since joined the faculty at the Oklahoma College of Optometry and serves as the Chief of Specialty Care Clinics and the Chief of Electrodiagnostics Clinic.

In 2014, he founded and now heads the Dry Eye Clinic at the College of Optometry. Also in 2014, he was named the Director of Continuing Education as well as the Assistant Dean for Clinical Care Services at the Oklahoma College of Optometry. Starting in 2020, he was named the Associate Dean of the NSU Oklahoma College of Optometry. He is a founding member, and currently serves as President, of the Intrepid Eye Society which is a group of emerging thought leaders in optometry.

He was named a member of PCON 250 – A list of the top 250 optometrists in the country who practice progressively, provide innovative patient care, conduct optometric research or excel in academia and share what they have learned with other optometrists to advance the profession. Dr. Lighthizer lectures nationally and internationally on numerous topics, most notably advanced ophthalmic procedures, electrodiagnostics, and ocular disease.
