Course Title: A Review of Ocular Manifestations Associated with GLP-1 and GLP-1/GIP Agents
Course Description: GLP-1 receptor agonists are widely prescribed for the management of Type 2 diabetes and obesity. Numerous reports have cited ocular side effects associated with their usage. The most frequently reported complications include non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy, diabetic retinopathy, links to macular complications, changes in intraocular pressure, refractive shifts and dry eye. Overall, while GLP-1RAs provide significant systemic benefits, careful ophthalmic monitoring, particularly in high-risk patients is recommended. This course will review the pathophysiology of GLP-1 RAs and investigate the link between these medications and ocular side effects. Case examples will be highlighted.
