8:00AM Pacific Time

The Good, The Bad and The Orals presented by Dr. Walt Whitley

There is a lack of understanding among optometrists regarding how and when to use oral antibiotics to combat ocular conditions. There is a gap in understanding among optometrists regarding the diagnosis of various forms of herpetic eye disease and the proper dosing of oral antiviral medications for each entity. There is also a gap in understanding of optometrists regarding the indications, contraindications, dosing, and adverse effects of orally applied antibiotics and antiviral medications. This needs assessment was derived through lectures, conversations, and surveys from previous meetings. This program has been designed based upon this information and attempts to bridge these educational gaps.

Oral medications play an integral role in the treatment and management of ocular disease. Additionally, the side effects of many common systemic medications can have ocular side effects. Through case examples, this course will review the impact oral medications have on our patients and practice of optometry.
