Woo’s Wisdom: The Truth About Presbyopia Drops

Dr. Mile Brujic — Evidence-Based Cases and Myth-Busting Insights

Dr. Mile Brujic began his presentation by discussing the impact of presbyopia in the United States, along with common myths patients often have about the condition. He also explained the mechanism of action of the dilator muscle and the sphincter muscle, and which presbyopia drops work on each.

He went on to outline the advantages and disadvantages of the various treatment options for presbyopia, including spectacles, contact lenses, pharmacologic treatments, and surgical interventions.

Dr. Brujic then took a deeper dive into the mechanisms of action, efficacy, and clinical studies behind both current and upcoming pharmacological options for presbyopia, providing an evidence-based perspective to help clinicians navigate this evolving space.

Woo’s Wisdom: Trial by Data — Efficacy and Safety Across Today’s Pharmacologic Presbyopia Drops

With Dr. Gina Wesley and Dr. Nathan Lighthizer

Dr. Gina Wesley and Dr. Nathan Lighthizer began by asking an important question: what do you—or your presbyopic patients—think about readers, and what is the biggest challenge presbyopic patients face?

They then discussed strategies surrounding current and upcoming pharmacologic options for presbyopia, including miotics and lens-targeting/biochemical therapies that are currently in development.

The conversation also covered clinical trial results, mechanisms of action, dosing, and side effects of the three FDA-approved presbyopia drops: Vuity, Qlosi, and Vizz. In addition, they emphasized patient selection and shared best practices for effective communication to help set realistic expectations and optimize outcomes.

For soft lenses, she discussed CLARE, GPC, corneal neovascularization, corneal abrasions, and microcysts. She then moved on to RGP lenses, covering issues such as dimple veiling. Hybrid lenses were also addressed, with complications including SPK and peripheral staining. She concluded with scleral lenses, sharing common complications and important considerations for patient care.
