Miotic MythBusters for the Presbyopic Patient
At Woo U, we continue to highlight meaningful clinical discussions that support modern optometric practice. In the session “Miotic MythBusters for the Presbyopic Patient,” Dr Katie Griener explored the evolving role of miotic therapy in managing presbyopia and what it means for today’s clinicians.
“Miotic MythBusters for the Presbyopic Patient” with Dr Katie Griener
She began by defining the modern presbyope—patients who are more visually demanding, digitally engaged, and increasingly motivated to maintain clear near vision without heavy dependence on glasses. She also emphasized the scale of presbyopia in practice, noting that presbyopes make up around 60% of a typical OD’s patient base and that nearly half of our lives are spent in this stage.
A key focus of the talk was debunking common misconceptions surrounding miotic therapy. Dr. Griener broke down 11 prevailing myths, providing clear, evidence-based explanations and reviewing current pharmacologic options available for presbyopia management. She also discussed clinical evidence, highlighting where these treatments fit within modern care pathways.
Importantly, she addressed practical considerations such as patient selection, expected outcomes, and how to integrate miotic therapy into everyday practice workflows. Her message was clear: success depends on choosing the right patients, communicating effectively, and setting realistic expectations from the start.
Her key takeaways included identifying suitable candidates, educating patients clearly, managing expectations, consistently monitoring outcomes, and refining implementation to support long-term practice growth.
Thank you to Dr. Katie Griener for sharing her insights with the Woo U community and contributing to advancing clinical understanding in presbyopia care.
